Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lenakinta'nija'peres" 16, 1971 - March 31 1995), also known as Selena, is an American Tejano performer. Her contribution to fashion and music led to her being the "Queen" of Tejano music. She is one of the most well-known performers of the Mexican-American community of the late 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her third on their list of the "Greatest Latino Artists" according to Latin album releases and Latin songs charts. Her attire earned her the name "Tejano Madonna". Her fashion choices are what brought her the nickname "Tejano Madonna" by media outlets. Quintanilla, Suzette Quintanilla. Her reputation was frequently discredited in the 1980s , and was denied bookings at Texas venues for her performance of Tejano music, a male-dominated genre. However, her popularity grew after she won the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987, and she was awarded nine times in succession. The singer signed with EMI Latin in 1989. Her debut album was self-titled and released in the year following. Her brother was her primary music producer and writer. Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) was a top album, reaching number one in the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums Chart for eight consecutive month. The album's success in the commercial market earned music critics the right to call it the "breakthrough" recording of her musical career. One of the songs, "Como la Flor" was a smash and became her signature track. Live! (1993) was nominated as the best Mexican/American album at 1994 Grammy Awards. It was the first Tejano recording to win this award. Amor Prohibido became one the most-sold Latin albums in the United States in 1994. It was widely credited with the initiation of Tejano music's very first commercial era. It became one of Latin music's most well-known subgenres.
